Shakespeare created a serious of classical roles in his dramas and buffoons are one of them, and they all have characteristics based on the author＇s existent experience and their dramatic function. This paper analyses the function of buffoons in Shakespeare＇ s dramas from public entertainment, dramatic plots and aesthetics of ugliness perspectives, and explores the setting cause of buffoons combined with the development of drama in the age of Shakespeare.
