The Waves, finished by British novelist Virginia Woolf, is the masterpiece of stream of consciousness in English literature. The author employed three symbols for expressing her ideas about life： The sun represents the powerful linear time by which the life traces of people are recorded ; Besides, the wave that never stops at rising and falling down rhythmically par-allels to the eternal cycle of people＇ s lives ; The garden known for its flowers blooming and withering with accurate punc-tuality indicates the temporality of life and provides the people with a place for contemplation for varied and eternal life.
