A low cost miniature double focusing mass spectrometer fitted with a fast atom gun was devised. The instrument is intended to perform isotopic ratio analysis of ions. A description of the principles and applications is given. A precision of 1. 5% was obtained for microgram samples of nitrogen. Some applications are exemplified, among them are the use of 15N, 10B and 42Ca, 44Ca as tracers in the study of bioligical processes.
