“长者■宅”试解

An Explanation of ＂Zhangzhexuzhai（长者 宅）＂

对上博简《容成氏》第2简中的“ ”二字的释读,目前文字学界尚未有定论,有“秀宅”说、“戚施”说等多种解释。本文认为,该二字应当隶定为“ 宅”。“长者 宅”这句简文应当解释为“凸胸仰首的人拔除墓穴上的草”。从“官其材”的角度讲,可进一步解释为“凸胸仰首的人守墓”。

There are several interpretations on the two Chinese characters＂ ＂in No.2 scripts of Rongchengshi（《容成氏》） in Chu Bamboo Slips（Ⅱ） of Shanghai Museum, such as ＂xiuzhai（秀宅）＂ and ＂qishi（戚施）＂. Yet these interpretations are not completely convincible. According to their shapes and writing style, it is suggested in this article that these two characters should be written as ＂xuzhai（ 宅）＂ based on the statistics and analysis of the database of Chu kingdom＇s Characters during the period of Warring States. ＂Zhangzhexuzhai （长者 宅）＂ means that the disabled people with pigeon chest weeds tombs, which can be further interpreted that the disabled people with pi- geon chest keeps vigil at the tomb.
