Objective To observe and compare the effectiveness between oxygen atomization inhalation and gargle for prevention of radiotherapy induced oral and oropharynx mucositis. Methods Sixty cases of nasopharyngeal cancer patients treated with radiotherapy were randomly divided into two groups equally. The observation group was given oxygen atomization inhalation, while the control group was given gargle. The therapeutic condition, the incidence and recovery of radiotherapy induced oral and oropharynx mucositis were compared. Results The occurrence time of grade Ⅰ and gradeⅡ radiotherapy induced oral and oropharynx mucositis of observation group were significantly shorter than those of control group (P 〈0.05), while no statistical difference was found between two groups in the occurrence time of grade m (P〉0.05). The radiation reaction of observation group mainly distributed in grade Ⅰ and grade Ⅱ, while the radiation reaction of control group mainly distributed in grade m and grade IV, with statistical difference between two groups (P〈0.05). No statistical difference was found between two groups in the duration from the start of radiotherapy to recovery (P〉0.05), while the duration from the end of radiotherapy to recovery of observation group was significantly shorter than that of control group (P 〈0.05). Conclusions Oxygen atomization inhalation has better efficacy than gargle for prevention of radiotherapy induced oral and oropharynx mucositis.
