Shakespeare’ s works in traditional Chinese opera appeared at the beginning of the 20th century, devel-oped greatly in the 1940s and 1980s, and flourished in the beginning of the 21st century. The adapted Shakespeare’ s plays share common characteristics, such as high-moralized theme connotation, fascinating legendary story, free and open space and time on the stage and the performance characteristics of being disguised as opposite gender. There are principles while choosing contents. First, simplify characters and clues to highlight the main theme; secondly, change roles and outcomes caring for traditional aesthetics; thirdly, transplant plots with Chinization of the back-ground and language. The unique charm of Shakespeare’ s plays lies in a harmonious combination of inner drama and external appreciation and inheriting tradition and artistic innovation.
