The novel Priest in Black, translated by Wu Chou and regarded as the beginning of Chekhov's process of sinicization, became popular at that time because it presented a new connotation inspired by the Chinese fantasy literature. Later, the novel gradually lost its prominent position because of the criticisms of fantasy novels during the New Culture Movement. However, while it faded away as a fantasy story with characteristics of medical works, The Diary of a Madman, a symbolism novel with the similar characteristics of medical works, came into readers' sight.
