Catgut implantation therapy is one major innovation in the medical history of acupuncture. By reviewing the origin and development of catgut implantation therapy,we are able to know the social backgrounds comprehensively and to make sense of its mechanisms to cure diseases. We insist that catgut implantation therapy started from middle age in 1950 s. It stemed from the histotherapy stimulated by foreign protein and the combination of long-acting needle-embedding therapy and acupoints. Catgut implantation therapy has a booming development in the 60 years with the formation of unique theory and operating system,making great progress in normalization and standardization.
