Reasons of Abundant Dowry in the Song Dynasty

宋代是中国古代教育、科学和文化高速发展的时代。区别于其他时代的一种特殊社会现象是婚姻论财现象的出现,而女子出嫁盛行丰厚的嫁妆也就成了宋代独具特色的现象。宋代厚奁的原因主要有父母爱女之心、宋代的商品经济的繁荣、海外贸易的发展、科举取士的发展、士人之间攀比心理以及女子财产权利在法律上的保障等。

The Song Dynasty was a rapid development stage of education,science,and culture in ancient China. The special social phenomenon in the Song Dynasty which was different from other dynasties was the negotiation of dowry,therefore the abundant dowry became the distinguishing feature in the Song Dynasty. The reasons of the abundant dowry are the parent＇s love,the prosperity of the economy,the extension of the overseas trade,the development of imperial examination,the mind of rivalry,and the guarantee of woman ＇s property rights in the law.
