《水浒叶子》是为马吊设计的标准赌具而并非酒牌,两者在形制和功能上所有区别;《水浒叶子》与《水浒》文本具有多重互文效应,主要表现在三个方面:叶子中的人物排名具有一定的批评含义;叶子中的像赞可以看作画家直接的评语,包括人物论和社会历史批评两方面;叶子图像的设计显示了士人阶层对《水浒》的接受,与像赞文本之间相映成趣。从书法和图像(像赞)的角度蠡测《水浒叶子》的下限最迟应为1627年。
