On the social functions of the mosque in contemporary Chinese cities

在我国,城市中的清真寺在当代具有重要的社会功能。清真寺作为国家法定的宗教活动场所,一方面,通过参与形塑群体性规则意识、参与规范和约束穆斯林的客观行为,实现了参与国家社会控制,维护社会秩序的功能;另一方面,通过清真寺内的宗教仪式和身份认同机制,清真寺展现出了强大的聚合力,成为了凝聚社会团结的粘合剂;而作为社会组织,清真寺在"爱国爱教"传统的指引下,通过组织和开展各项社会活动,引导宗教与信教群众更好地适应社会,成为了勾联个人与群体、地方与国家关系的重要纽带和桥梁。

The mosque has important social functions in contemporary Chinese cities. As a legal religious area, the mosque involves it- self in the social control, and maintains the social order by establishing the collective consciousness and regulating the objective behav- iors of the Muslims. On the other hand, the mosque shows the strong power of cohesion through religious rites and its identity - system, and in turn strengthens social unity. As a social organization under the guidance of ＂loving both the nation and the religion＂, the mosque organizes various social activities for helping its believers adapt to the society better and serves as an important bridge between individuals and groups, as well as between the local society and the whole country.
