The zang-organ system of liver which is called 'gan' in traditional Chinese medicine relates to a complex physiological structure. It dominates the waxing and waning of yin and yang, governs the flowing and spreading of qi and blood, and regulates the ascending and descending of spleen qi.Hence,it can be inferred that 'the liver plays the central role in the zangorgans system'.Meanwhile,it is believed that 'disharmony of the liver can affect any of the other organs' because the liver's pathogenesis is varied and complicated, and when disorder occurs in the liver,it not only affects the function of liver itself, but also gets other four zang-organs,say,the heart, the spleen, the lung and the kidney, into trouble.Based on the theory of circular motion of five phases, the current study re-recognizes and re-interprets the view of 'disharmony of the liver can affect any of the other organs' as:The liver-wood in the east gets injured, which makes wood unable to 'straighten and soften' accordingly. Then, the detrimental effect rushes upward to the blazing-up heart-fire in the south, stretches across the central spleen-earth and launches a counterattack there, rebels lung-metal in the west and depletes downward the kidney-water in the north resulting in the failure of fire to 'rise and give out light',earth to 'bear and nourish',metal to 'depurate and disperse',and water to 'moisten and store'.In this way,all the five zang-organs suffer from damage inflicted by disharmony of the liver, and due to this, balance and harmony of human body cannot be maintained.
