Effect of management by objective on inpatient falls prevention

Objective To explore the feasibility and effectiveness of management by objective （MBO） on inpatient falls prevention. Methods The basic principles and procedures of MBO were followed, which included determining control target, making tracking content of on-site inspection and its evaluation criteria, strengthening training of entire staff, tracking and supervision and giving timely feedback, then MBO was implemented to prevent inpatient falls. The rate of inpatient falls and the accuracy of nurses＇ ma nagement toward high-risk patients before and after MBO were evaluated and compared. Results After MBO, the rate of inpatient falls was 0.15%, and the baseline incidence was 0.20%, there was significant difference （P〈0.01）. and the accuracy of nurses＇ management toward high-risk patients increased from 33.33%- 43.06% to 84.72%--93.06%, and there were significant diffe- rences （P〈0.01 for all）. Conclusion MBO can reduce the rate of inpatient falls, while in the process of MBO, the target value should be set scientifically, the management effect should be assessed periodically and given corresponding and improving interven- tions, then to reach the aim of continuous quality improvement.
