Analyzing Reasons of Overflowing Opium in the Period of Republic of China in the District of Southwest

民国时期西南地区罂粟种植规模较大,其主要原因有:西南地区自然条件能够满足罂粟的生长需求;巨大的经济利益驱使百姓扩大罂粟种植面积;地方军阀的纵容和支持造成了鸦片贸易的泛滥;另外,罂粟的药用功能也是罂粟长期以来难以完全禁绝的原因之一。罂粟种植挤压了粮食和经济作物种植面积,导致了粮食危机的形成和饥荒的产生。

Opium is planted on a large scale in the district of southwest in period of the Republic of China. The reasons mainly are as follows： the good natural condition in the district of southwest can meet the need of living; much profit of planting opium can make people enlarge the scale of planting opium; the conniving and supporting of native warlord lead to the overflowing of opium trade ; besides, the medicine function is one of reasons that opium cannot be forbidden for a long time. The planting of opium reduces the scale of food and industrial crop. Finally, crisis of food and famine was formed.
