玉瑗是璧环类玉器的一种器物类型,其萌芽可追溯到新石器时代,是应璧、环类器物的解玉之需而产生的。符合《考工记》《尔雅》所记玉瑗定义的实物,大约出现于战国时期。上海博物馆所藏的一件"重环谷纹玉璧",与《考工记》所载"璧羡度尺,好三寸,以为度"符合若节,应是当时璧、瑗、环三器集于一体的标准器。

Yuan is a type ofjadering originated in Neolithic Age to meet the requirement of producing Bi or Huan. The jade Yuan recorded in Kao Gong Ji andErYa may first appear in Warring States Period. The Double-circles-and-grain-pattern Jade Bi collected by Shanghai Museumshould be considered as a standard ware integrated Bi, Yuan and Huan at that time, since it accorded with related record thatthe Bi with a hole of three Cun in diameter could be used as a measurein Kao Gong Ji.
