Modern scholars believe that Zang Jinshu's Selected Yuan Dramas cannot serve as a reference to the study on Yuan dramas because of the great modification and deletion by the author. S. Owen's The Cambridge History of Chinese Literature also states clearly that Thirty Kinds of Yuan Dramas is the only reliable version, directly denying the version compiled in the Ming Dynasty. The present paper makes a comparative study on the two versions and concludes that the difference between them lies in the origin of drama and there is no matter of the addition or deletion by the author. Selected Yuan Dramas originates from the Royal Theater of the imperial palace, while Thirty Kinds of Yuan Dramas originates from the stage text of folk performance.
