New Findings about the Origin of the Yao Family of Wuxing

吴兴姚氏是汉唐之间颇具代表性的文化士族,为唐代江东四大士族之一。传统观点认为吴兴姚氏只有吴兴武康姚氏一支。根据两篇墓志铭,发现了异于吴兴武康姚氏的另外两支姚氏源流,即吴兴姚氏的永嘉支和长城支。这对全面研究吴兴姚氏以及汉唐间文化士族兴衰具有一定意义。

The Yao family of Wuxing is the representative cultural gentry between the Han and Tang Dynasties and one of the four major clans of jiangdong in the Tang Dynasty. The traditional view has maintained that there is only one branch of the Yao family of Wuxing,mainly in Wukang. It is found from the two epitaphs that besides Wukang there exist the other two branches of the Yao family respectively in Yongjia and Changcheng,which is of great significance to the comprehensive study of the Yao family and the ups and downs of cultural gentry between the Han and Tang Dynasties.
