历史唯物主义在今天面临诸多挑战。其中,文化问题的理论探讨显得尤为突出,可以说是摆在历史唯物主义面前的当务之急。如何认识文化的性质和作用?如何应对"发达工业社会的文化转型"?如何解释"新社会运动"所引发的"承认政治"?如何把握文化全球化带来的诸多矛盾?显然这些问题在经典作家那里是没有现成答案的。因此需要从历史唯物主义基本原理中寻求相应的思想储备,深化并扩展经济基础与上层建筑的理论内涵,以此回应当代社会急剧变革中的文化作用问题。

Historical materialism faces many challenges today. Among them the theory of cul- tural issues is particularly prominent. How to understand the nature and role of culture？ How to deal with the cultural transformation of the developed industrial society？ How to explain the ＂new social movement＂ caused by the ＂politics of recognition＂？ How to grasp the contradictions brought by the cultural globalization？ Obviously there is no ready-made answer to these questions in the classic writers. Therefore, we need to seek the corresponding thought reserves from the basic principles of historical materialism, expanding and deepening the theory connotation of eco- nomic base and superstructure, and respond to the cultural issues in the drastic social transforma- tion in the contemporary society.
