The Me rchant of Venice is one of Shfikespefire＇s famous comedies. However, the ＂ comedy＂ is shrou-ded in ＂ sadness＂ from the beginning to the end. Seemingly hostile and conflicting,Antonio and Shylock both have attributes of sadness in self cognition and affirmation, which reflects the contradiction in Antonio’s self perception in the context of humanism movement,and the conflict in alien Shylock＇s affirmation of himself and the holiness of his nation.
