A Comment on Athenaeus' Attack on the Historical Creditability of Plato

柏拉图提到苏格拉底曾到三地作战:波提戴亚、安非波里斯、德里昂,但阿忒奈奥斯对他的记载提出否定。阿忒奈奥斯的目的在于从对哲学家的批判入手否定哲学的权威。他对柏拉图的史实批驳暴露出种种错误,不足为信。柏拉图的记载基本准确,但受个人感情的影响,他的细节也有待商榷。

Plato referred that Socrates fought three battles, one in Potidaea, one in Amphipolis and another in Delium, but it＇s doubted, even denied by Athenaeus, a later writer in the early Roman Empire. Athenaeus sought to challenge philosophy by criticizing philosophers. However, he was not convincing owning to some mistakes in his argument. Basically, Plato＇s description was accurate, but it remained to be queried in some details due to his favouritism toward Socrates.
