六朝志怪虽不脱"丛残小语",但在叙事上积累了丰富的艺术经验。《穷怪录》是南北朝志怪小说的选本,其晚期优秀之作已呈现出向唐传奇过渡的明显迹象。在初唐到盛唐的百余年间,唐传奇从初创到成熟,并作为一种正式文体卓然确立,从而开启了我国古代小说历史发展的新时代。
