Placed in the historical context of the turn from the 16th century to the 17th century, Shakespeare's Othello can be found to reflect the political relations between England, Ireland and Spain, through its metaphorical presentation of Venice, Othello (Cyprus) and Iago respectively. The disaster upon Venice brought by the barbarian Othello and the villainy Iago conveys English national anxiety towards Ireland and Spain at that time. Meanwhile, Othello offers a secret opening for this national anxie-ty.
