Fracture happened to a batch of TA3 titanium alloy blade plates for surgical implants during use. However, this batch of plates was qualified according to GB/T 13810-2007. Through metallographic examination, scanning electron microscope and energy spectrum analysis, surface and cross-sectional hardness test and so on, the fracture reasons of this batch of TA3 titanium alloy plates were analyzed. The results show that hard and brittle oxygen-rich contamination layer formed on the surface of this batch of titanium alloy plates, so micro cracks easily formed when they were deformed, which resulted in their fracture during use. At the same time, the method of testing the surface Vickers hardness by increasing test load step by step could be used as a means to determine whether there is a layer of contaminants on the surface of TA3 titanium alloy plate.
