The Broken City:Urban Writing in Edward Albee's The American Dream

爱德华·阿尔比的戏剧创作产生于美国20世纪60年代社会转型时期,作品中出现的大量城市形象反映了当时社会存在的诸多问题,并且逐步成为刻画剧中人物形象,揭示现当代美国社会精神危机的重要手段。本文以其代表作《美国梦》为个案,通过分析作品中的城市形象,解读城市中人物的伦理关系,挖掘城市中的社会问题,深入探讨阿尔比独特的城市建构方法,为其作品中城市形象赋予更深的社会意义。

Ever since the 1960 s,Edward Albee has created a large variety of works,within which we can find a lot of city images.Albee＇s urban images reflect many social problems which took shape in the transitional period of the mid-century,and have become one of the most important means to portray characters and to reveal the spiritual crisis in contemporary American society.Taking his representative work The American Dream as an example,the paper plans to analyze it from the following aspects：the city images emerging in the work,the ethical relationship between the characters,the major social problems in the city,and Albee＇s unique way of constructing the city image.With all these efforts,the authors hope to give Albee＇s city images more social meaning.
