Iris Murdoch's early work The Unicorn tells a story of ultimate failure,in which characters use reason as a weapon to recognize themselves, others and the world. The characters' limited cognition, seemingly a result of unreliable narration, lies in the fact that the cognitive value of body has long been eclipsed by reason in the West. From the perspective of body cognition, the novel conducts a thought experiment with body philosophy to resist reason-based Western civilization.
