In Caribbean literary works, the Chinese are often represented as shopkeepers preoccupied with money who exploit other Caribbean people.Anglophone Chinese Caribbean literature, which emerged in the 1980 s,revolts against this stereotype, and its development can be roughly divided into three stages.Although in the first stage Chinese Caribbean writers showed little interest in engaging issues of Chineseness, they started to highlight their ethnic identity and focus on Chinese Caribbean experience in the second stage, but still confined to the traditional role of the Chinese as shopkeepers. In the third stage,Chinese Caribbean literary works began to form other images of the Chinese, thus completely subverting stereotypical representations of Chinese subjects.
