There have been but a few novelists who are literary critics at the same time in the history of English literature like Henry James and David Lodge. Although they lived in different times, they shared similar literary and critical experiences, witnessing the transition in literary history. Henry James' influence on Lodge could be traced in many of Lodge's novels and critical essays. Their relationship is like that of the father and the son, or the precursor and the latecomer as described by Harold Bloom. The article, based on Bloom's theory of influence and adopting the strategy of intertextuality, aims at exploring how Lodge overcomes the anxiety of influence and surpasses James in novel creation.
