Being a nameless princess in "The Death of John the Baptist" in the Bible, the prototype of Salome inspired passion and creativity of many writers and artists in the fin-de-siecle Europe. In their reproductions and representations, Salome evolved from a flat nobody into an artistic image with profound connotations. The aesthetic and decadent image created by Oscar Wilde in his drama Salome was the most popular in the world, which helped form her classical images in the fields of fine arts, music and dance. The prevalence of Salome became a special cultural phenomenon in the fin-de-siecle Europe, which represents a Salome complex of those writers and artists and reflects the great impact on literature and art by the social and cultural backgrounds of that era. This paper is an interpretation of the Salome complex from different cultural dimensions, such as religion, Orientalism, gender politics and aestheticism.
