The "nature" in Herzog is the objective reflection of its Jewish American intellectual protagonist Herzog's paradoxical epistemology. It symbolizes his inheritance of the pastoral ideal, transcendentalism and individualism as well as his anxiety towards the American countercultural movements in 1960 s when the "garden" becomes disillusioned as the uncontrollable "wasteland". Herzog feels frustrated when he fails to rebuild the "nature". Finally,he has to return to the society. The paradoxically double "nature" also implies Jewish American writer Saul Bellow's conflicted thoughts in1960 s.
