The Features and Significances of the Intercultural Communication in the American Westward Movement

学术界对美国西进传播问题的研究极少。本文主要从文化的角度对西进传播进行探讨。文章首先较深入地分析总结了跨文化的西进传播的一般特点,如以英语为通用语言、非语言信号在人际传播中占重要地位、一般要经过二级或三级传播、移民到美国的时间愈久效果愈好等。文章还认为,跨文化的西进传播具有重要的历史意义,它促进了美国西部的开发、加强了文化的交流和融合、提高了美国人的跨文化交流能力、并促进了跨文化传播研究的兴起。

This monograph looks into the communications in the American westward movement from their cultural perspectives. It analyzes at first the features of intercultural communications in the American westward movement, including using English as the common language, the important role of nonverbal means in personal communication, more than one grade communication process, the longer time in American the better effectiveness in communication. It then explores the historic influences of these intercultural communications, i.e. they promoted the development of the American west, advanced the exchanges and integration among the different cultures, improved the intercultural communication ability of American people, and prompted the rise of studies in intercultural communication in American.
