张之洞创办湖北近代教育体系中的外籍教习状况探析

An Exploration of Foreign Teachers in the Hubei Modern Education System Founded by ZHANG Zhi-dong

1889年至1907年,张之洞主政湖北18年,仿照西方构建起的一套新式教育制度体系。鉴于其时师资匮乏,张之洞借才外域,聘请大批外籍教习,确保了湖北近代教育事业的发展。外籍教习在湖北教育实现近代转型过程中所起的作用是不言而喻的,他们的工作在某种程度上影响了新式学堂人才培养的质量。学术界对此已有一些研究,但都是在针对张之洞聘请外籍人才研究时兼论外籍教习。本文拟就此问题作初步探讨,以揭示出张之洞在创办湖北近代教育体系中的外籍教习群体状况。

Zhang Zhidong presided Hubei province for over 18 years. He modeled on the west to build up a system of modern education system. In view of the situation that there was a lack of teachers, he hired a large number of foreign teachers in order to ensure the new education development. Zhang Zhi- dong is worth using for reference in aspects such as the management, hiring channels of foreign teachers. Foreign teachers didn＇t live up to his expectation, but they fulfilled their duties and made a contribution in career planning, guidance and personnel training of Hubei＇s modern education .
