Atherosclerosis is a common and frequently - occurring disease in the world, and the main pathological basis of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, seriously affecting human life and health. AS a chronic inflammatory response process, hyperlipidemia, hypertension, high blood sugar, high uric acid, obesity and other factors lead to vascular endothelial inju- ry, vascular wall thickening, elastic changes, such as a series of changes. Macrophage apoptosis and autophagy play different roles respectively, at different stages of AS, and different phenotypes of macrophages also play different roles, moderate apoptosis and autophagy can decrease the inflammatory reaction and ensure the stability of AS plaques ,the polarization of MI type macrophages to M2 macrophages also enhanced the stability of AS plaque, reduced the incidence of clinical adverse events. In this paper, the relationship between macrophage apoptosis ,autophagy, polarization and the development of AS and the research progress of tradi- tional Chinese medicine intervention are summarized to provide a new theoretical basis for the prevention and treatment of AS and the development of new drugs.
