The Unique Chinese Way of Film Colorization From late 1969 to the early 1970s, the technicians at the photo workshop of Xinhua News Agency devised a method for adding color to black-and-white photos: masks were used in place of color filters to achieve color separation, controlling and altering the density of silver salt in the different parts of black-and-white negatives. This invention weaned China from material imports for film colorization, filling a void in China's history of photography.
