The Zoo Story is Edward Albee's first important one-act play,in which 'the zoo'is a panoramic image of American society. It shapes two masculine images of distinct classes and sexualities, placing the ideal man exalted by the main-stream culture within the gaze and interpellation of 'the other'. It reveals the complacency and conformity of the middle-class and meanwhile reflects the cage image of the New York City and the consumption society's imprisonment of men. It also indicates that the post-industrial consumption culture has imposed norms and erosions on American middle-class masculinity, embodying the predicament and crisis of hegemonic masculinity. This implies Albee's concern about and reflection on the Post-WWII American gender politics and individual identities.
