《小说月报》在新文化运动发展的背景下,其杂志的销量持续下降,同时读者主体由旧式文人转变为新式学生与城市大众,原有的杂志内容已经很难满足读者的需求。在这样的契机下,自1921年第12卷第1号开始,《小说月报》在主编沈雁冰的带领下大胆进行改革,放弃以文言章回小说、旧体诗词、改良新剧等栏目为主要内容的办报理念,全面革新内容,成为文学研究会机关刊物,同时也成为倡导"为人生"的现实主义文学的重要阵地。新改版的《小说月报》以积极宣传治世救国之道的办报理念,通过开设专注、专栏、文学家研究、海外文坛消息、评论、创作批评等栏目,刊登大量翻译和白话文文学作品,吸引读者,提升销量,成为新思潮传播的重要阵地,推动了新文化运动的发展。同时,《小说月报》也借助改革,建立起编辑与读者的良性互动关系,使读者从传统的被动参与、被动启蒙转变为积极参与杂志构建的新生力量。

With the development of the New Culture Movement, sales of The Short Story Magazine were declining and its readership shifted from traditional intellectuals to new style students and urban residents. Such a context provided opportunity for the magazine＇s reform. Beginning from no.l, vol.12, 1921, under the leadership of Editor-in-chief Shen Yanbing, classical Chinese novels, poetry and new drama gave way to innovative contents. The Short Story Magazine then became an official magazine of the Literary Research Society and an important front of realistic literature. The reformed magazine was actively engaged in promoting the way of salvation by having special columns, initiating literary studies and publishing overseas literary news, comments, criticism and a large number of translated or vernacular literary works. These measures were effective in attracting readers and promoting sales. Soon, The Short Story Magazine became an important front of the dissemination of new thoughts and had promoted the development of the New Culture Movement. Thanks to the reform, a beneficiary interaction between the editors and the readers was formed. The readers became active participants in the growth of a magazine.
