Animal Skulls and Suppression of Evil Spirits As the sacrificial pits Nos. 2, 3, and 4 were excavated, more peculiar archaeological findings were unveiled in front of us. Underneath pit No. 2, beneath two layers of stone chips, sixteen sets of animal skeletons, mostly skulls, with a small amount of shoulder blades and limb bones, were placed in a ring-like formation with uneven spacing. Among these animal skulls, we also found a human skull as well as red stains by hematite powders on the bones of some horses and kiangs. Later, a similar arrangement was found in pit No. 4. We were intrigued: what kind of ancient custom could this be?
