Hope in Improvement: On Contemporary Black Women's Life in Terry McMillan's A Day Late and a Dollar Short

作为当代黑人女性作家的新锐,特瑞·麦克米兰致力于描写当代黑人女性的生活。通过分析麦克米兰的小说《力不从心》,从挣扎于家庭亲情中的中产阶级黑人女性、运用法律保护自己的黑人女性、处在种族关系改善中的黑人女性和卸去"强大的黑人女性"形象负担的黑人女性等四个方面,看作者如何描写当代黑人女性的改变,特别是她们生活上的改善,并由此透视作者对黑人女性气质的重新界定。

As an emerging contemporary black woman writer, Terry McMillan dedicates herself to the description of the contemporary black women＇s life. This paper analyzes McMillan＇s A Date Late and a Dollar Short in the following four aspects： the black middle-class women struggling in family ties, the black women protecting themselves using laws, the black women in the improving racial relation and the black women getting rid of the ＂strong black women＂image. The aim of the paper is to reveal how the author describes the changes that have taken place to contemporary black women, especially the progress in their lives as well as the author＇s redefinition of femininity of black women.
