Sketch of Su Ting as a Talent in the Tang Dynasty as well as Collation and Interpretation of His Five-Character Quatrains

武功苏氏自风节名臣苏武迄今,两千多年来,一直以忠贞享誉神州大地。唐代名相苏颋即是其中的佼佼者。其幼颖悟,长耿介,性廉俭,为官敢犯颜直谏,为文世称大手笔。其五言绝句,多入后世选家法眼,诸书与版本之间或有异文待逐一校释,并给出是非优劣之按断。

Since the famous Su Wu, a man of integrity and honesty, the Su＇ s family in Wugong County has been enjoying great prestige all over China. Su Ting, an eminent minister of the Tang Dy- nasty was the best example. He was perspicacious at a young age and was straightforward in character. Being incorruptible and thrifty as an official, he dared to admonish his superiors without being afraid to offend them. As one of the literati, he was famous for his great works. His five-character quatrains, much to the delight of the compilers of later generations, were selected in many books. However, there existed different versions or variants concerning his works, which needed to be collated and interpreted one by one with proper judgments given concerning which one is superior or right.
