湖州铁佛寺因寺内有宋铸铁观音而得名。该寺院历史悠久、地位特殊、影响深远,而寺内供奉的铁观音也有着其独特的铸造缘起、创作材质、造像形制和造型特征等。同时从该造像颇具中国特色的服饰、手势等方面,可以看出观音信仰传入中国后,尤其在宋代之后具有明显的中国化倾向。

The Temple in Huzhou is named Tiefo because there is an iron Avalokitesvara Statue cast in Song dynasty. This temple has a long history, special status and profound influence. This statue also has got its own special reason of creation, material and shape. Meanwhile, we can perceive the indi- genization tendency of the faith of Avalokitesvara from the costume and gesture of this Avalokitesvara statue after it came into China especially after Song dynasty.
