On the Significance of Huanghuin Lao-zi's Dao

摘要 "恍惚"是老子哲学的一个重要概念,它既是指"道"呈现在人们面前的样态,又是人们借以体道的方法与途径。就前者而言,"恍惚"显示了"道"超越日常感觉经验、不可把捉的绝对、独立的一面。就后者而言,"恍惚"成为人与"道"共鸣、邂逅的契机。就后者而言,"恍惚"意味着排斥外在感官欲望的干扰,放弃有为与偏执,保持精神上的虚静。因此,"恍惚"在精神层面上可以解读为"虚静"与"凝神"。而这与老子的"载营魄抱一、抟气致柔"思想以及庄子的"吾丧我"、"离形去知、同于大通"的思想均有相通之处,在一定意义上可能揭示出道家形神修养工夫的某些特质。 As a modality presented to people by the Dao, and a method and approach by which people experience the Dao, Huang hu 恍惚(lit., the vague and invisible) is an important concept in Lao-zi's philosophy. In regard to its meaning of mo- dality, huang hu exhibits the absolute and independent aspect of the Dao which transcends people's everyday sensory experi- ence; in respect to its meaning of method and approach, huang hu becomes a chance for people to encounter and resonate with the Dao. This paper underlines its second meaning. Huang hu refers to repelling disturbances of desires from external sense organs, giving up deliberate actions and stubbornness, and keeping a mental state of void. Therefore, huang hu at the spiritual level can be interpreted as "void-quietness" and "concentration of spirit." This is commensurate with Lao-zi's advo- cacy of "embracing one" and "keeping perfectly soft" and Zhuang-zi's (368-286 BCE) proposition of "losing oneself" and "leaving the body and getting rid of wisdom", which in some sense might have revealed some characteristics of the cultivation of body and spirit in Daoism.
