The Battle of Zhoushan and the Kuomintang retreat from Zhoushan Island is the historical origin of there being a large number of Zhoushanese spouses in Taiwan. Kuomintang veterans of Zhoushanese origin returning home served to open the door to cross-strait marriages and exchanges.This paper discusses the living and political environment for mainland spouses in Taiwan and changes to their lives. With recent developments in mainland Chinese economy and society, as well as the ever-changeable state of cross-strait relations, Zhoushanese spouses in Taiwan are actively engaging in the establishment of a community of their own and participating in civil society, particularly with regard to asserting their political rights.With the aid of social media and other modern forms of communication, the mainland spouses＇ political participation wilt witness a promising future.
