Objective: to investigate the efficacy of combination therapy of proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation( PNF) and trigger point massage against lateral epicondylitis of tennis students. Methods: forty-two patients with lateral epicondylitis were enrolled for combined treatment of PNF and trigger point massage. PNF procedures:patients sit in a upright posture, and( 1) moved treated wrist flexed and forearm pronated passively to the maximum, and then kept elbow extending for 15″,( 2) kept extending wrist and supinating forearm and flexing elbow against resistance in this position for 7″,( 3) moved wrist flexed and forearm pronated passively even further, and then kept elbow extending for 15″,( 4) repeated( 2) and( 3) at least 5 times. Trigger point massage procedures:patients sit in a upright posture with trigger point massage of extensor carpi radialis longus and extensor carpi radialis brevis for 3 sets,5 minutes each set,2 minutes rest intervals between sets. The performance of PNF and trigger point massage was once daily for three courses. A course included 7 days, and there was an interval of one day between courses. Results: among 42 patients,15( 35. 71%) were clinically cured,18( 42. 86%) observably relieved, and 9 cases( 21. 43%) generally relieved at the end of the third course. Total effective rate was 100%.Conclusion: our results suggested that combination therapy with PNF and trigger point massage was effective and should be considered as first- line treatment in patients with lateral epicondylitis.
