“HMOOB” “MAB”AND“SUAY”:HMONG AMERICAN SELFIDENTIFICATION AND INTER-ETHNIC DISTINCTION

美国苗族"Hmoob"人,仍然保存着自己的语言。"Hmoob"人的语言属于苗语西部方言的一种次方言,其中某些词汇可能源于古代汉语。"Hmoob"人现今仍然在使用的几个词汇如"Hmoob""Mab"和"Suav"能够清晰地反映出"Hmoob"人群体的自我认同与族群分野建构的历史过程。在建构自我认同与族群分野系统的过程中,"Hmoob"人的族际关系观念受到其历史迁徙过程与华夏民族观的影响,但文化自觉因素在其中扮演着主要的角色。"Mab"一词与其衍生词汇在美国"Hmoob"人群体的当代自我认同与族际分野中仍然存在,但已在一定程度上发生了变化。

not lost their Although the Hmong have migrated to the United States about 50 years, they have language. Contained within the Hmong language that belongs to the west dialect of Miao language are some words carried over from ancient Chinise. One of the three Hmong words, ＂Hmoob＂, ＂Mab＂ and ＂Suav＂ reflect their self-identification and inter-ethnic distinction. During the process of constructing their self-identification and the system of inter-ethnic distinction, Hmong people＇ s viewpoints of inter-ethnic relationship were influenced by their migration in historical peri- od and Huaxia people＇ s national viewpoints, and their cultural self-consciousness played very im- portant role. Although the Hmong continue to use these terms, the word ＂Mab＂ and its derivative words take on additional meaning.
