The Bell Jar is an autobiographical novel by Sylvia Plath, an American female writer who committed suicide briefly after its publication. The novel, based on the real experience of herself, reflects her inner world loyally. This paper introduces the historical background as well as the autho-re ss＇ experience and further probes into the images in addition to linguistic features of this book. Moreover, it reveals the dilemma encountered by women in the patriarchal society and advocates that only through strengthening their subject consciousness could women have the access to the immense world outside of the bell jar dilemma and their full development.
