Objective To investigate the literature distribution of different research methods of general practice related fields in China from 2003 to 2013. Methods Systematic retrieval of literature about general practice was made in CNKI and Wanfang database, with a searching time from January 2003 to December 2013. Bibliometric method and content analysis were used to analyze literature, to screen general practice researches of using different methods. Results A total of 6223 pieces of qualified literature were included, in the literature of observational studies, the amount of current studies, case reports, ecological studies, case control studies, and cohort studies were 4758, 287, 220, 280 pieces respectively. In the literature of experimental study, the amount of the clinical trials and community trials were 393 and 927 pieces. There were 331 pieces of review studies and 25 pieces of Meta analysis studies. The literature quantity of research methods increased year by year, the number of literature increased significantly in 2013. From the view of different health problems, research institutions, magazines and funds, research methods mainly were current studies and community trials, followed by clinical trials and review, and the least amount of literature was Meta analysis. Conclusion From 2003 to 2013, there is a large number of the application of current study in general practice. While some research methods like Meta analysis, case Control study and cohort study still need to further promote in general practice.
