在布鲁克斯看来,主题分析是诗歌细读的重要环节,体现了诗歌的整体价值和意义。然而,长期以来主题分析存在着一个误区,将主题做简单生硬的陈述性归纳,而诗歌真正想表达的意义则被忽视。布鲁克斯在《叶芝的花繁根深之树》一文中,以"有机整体"的观点分析了叶芝的诗《在学童中间》,抓住意象对诗歌主题的体现和建构,主张回到诗歌本身的结构来解读诗歌的主题,将主题分析的意义和方法提炼出来。
