Exploration of the Deep Ecological Concepts Reflected in The Deserted Village by Oliver Goldsmith

奥利弗·哥尔德斯密斯的《荒村》严厉的批判了工业革命和圈地运动给乡村和农村人口带来的负面影响。诗中很多社会政治思想和阿伦·奈斯倡导的深层生态学的理念不谋而合:在政治上,主张所有阶级平等地享有生存和发展的权利;经济上,认为骄奢是一切腐败罪恶之源;意识上,点明财富的敛积并不等同于赢得幸福。

The Deserted Village is a poem by Oliver Goldsmith which condemns rural depopulation and the pursuit of excessive wealth. As the political ideas reflected in the poem happen to coincide with the platforms of deep ecology proposed by Ame Naess, this essay tries to explore the deep ecological values embodied in the poem from political,economic and ideological aspects. Like the deep ecological platforms, the poem advocates the equal right for all the classes to develop and bloom; It believes luxury is the root of corruption and evil and also distinguishes ＂opulence＂ from ＂happiness＂.
