Yadong shibao,or the East Asian Times, which was a Chinese newspaper founded by the Japanese in the eras of the Hundred Day’s Reform and Boxer Rebellion, reported a great number of political events at that time.Nay,prominent figures like Tang Caichang and Zhang Taiyan directly participated in the operation of the newspaper, thereby making it a significant source conducive to the studies in the modern Chinese history.Comparatively digging into the existing literature in Chinese and Japanese, the present paper attempts to reconstruct the complete history of Yadong shibao,as well to delineate the true roles eminent persons such as Tang Caichang,Zhang Taiyan and Song Shu had played in the business of the newspaper. In doing so,some established conclusions as regards the newspaper will be rectified.
