As one of the most salient ingredients of Confucianism, revolutionary thinking constitutes the theoretical source of the succession of ancient dynasties in China. Ancient Japan, known for its close affinity with the Confucian culture, has long been exposed to China's revolutionary thinking, thus forming the ideo- logical basis for this island country in respect to the change of reigning titles, succession of imperial thrones, and shoguns and royal families contending for power. However, during the reign of Mikado I, no succession of dynasties occurred. Therefore, Japan's revolutionary thinking by no means fits in with the "alien revolu- tion" found in China's Confucianism. Instead, it serves to account for the succession of Japan's virtual rul-ers, such as shoguns' seizure of state power, Mikado's overthrow of shoguns, etc.
