The Dialectal Classification and Historical Origin of Cantonese

粤方言的分区在学界存在较大的争议,基本可认定的区片为广东的粤海片(广府片)、四邑片、高雷片,广西的钦廉片、桂南片。不同学者,其粤方言分区的归属也不同。粤方言的历史源流有三种学说,即:秦汉以降中原移民说;古楚语来源说;汉语族群中的独立语言说。

The dialectal classification of Cantonese has been in clispute in Chinese acaclemic circles. Most scholars approved these sub -dialect zones which were Yuehai （Guangfu）, Siyi , Gaolei in Guangdong Province and Qinlian, Guinan in Guangxi Province. The different scholars have different opinions about the dialects distribution. There are three theories on the historical origins of Cantonese ： the first one is the origin of immigrants from Central Plains in the Qin and Han Dynasties ; the second one is the origin of ancient Chu dialect ; the third one is that Cantonese is an independent language in Chinese ethnic groups.
